With just 45 ‘sleeps’ until Christmas (as my daughter would say), it’s a good time to start thinking about Christmas decorations. The shops are full of them, with deals a plenty and a tonne of inspiration if you’d rather make things yourself. Here are my favourite ideas for a very shabby chic Christmas:
1. Christmas jumper gift tags & 2. Jute parcel ribbon
Although I spotted these cute Christmas jumper gift tags online, you could easily make them yourself using card, ribbon and string. What an amazing idea for an original gift tag! I also spotted that the seller had used natural fabric to create ‘ribbons’ on their parcels which looks lovely – an idea you could copy using any natural fabric you have lying around.
3. Shabby chic Christmas ‘gift bags’
For smaller Christmas gifts, why not pick up a pack of these quaint gift bags? They would look perfect decorated with a hand-crafted gift tag.
Above: Shabby chic Christmas gift bags – price: UK – £3.46 / pack 40 – not available in the US.
4. Tiny weenie snowflakes
I found these tiny snowflakes in Sainsbury’s – they are sold as ‘present toppers’ but I think they’d be perfect for all sorts of shabby chic crafting – Christmas cards, gift tags, present decoration, custom tree decorations and more.
Above: Sainsbury’s present toppers – £2.50/50 (currently part of the 3-for-2 deal)
5. Christmas paper chains
I spotted these pretty Christmas paper chains online but they are quite pricey. You could easily create the same look with pretty craft paper (see below) or strong wrapping paper, and edging scissors if you want to imitate the scalloped edges. Hobbycraft do a pack of 2 value edging scissors for just £2.00.

6. Shabby chic wooden letters
These sweet wooden letters would make a lovely decoration for the fireplace this Christmas. Want to do it yourself? Cut the letters out of craft paper and use mini pegs to attach them to white or rough brown string. Add some pretty ribbons in between.

7. Shabby chic Christmas Reindeer plaque
This sweet shabby chic style plaque is perfect to remind you (and your little ones) of all the reindeer’s names this Christmas!
8. Shabby chic Christmas gingerbread candle
Fill your home with delicious Christmas smells – this cute candle is made of soy and smells like gingerbread, mmmm.
9. DIY Christmas cards
I’m not a fan of Christmas cards – they take 2 seconds to write and they’re so impersonal. I AM a huge fan of homemade Christmas cards though – and I love making my own. This year’s great value supplies come from Wilkinsons and Sainsburys.
Above: Handmade Christmas card using – cards from Wilkos, pretty paper from Wilkos (mentioned under 5 above), snowflakes (4 above), ribbon from Wilkos (mentioned under 6 above), mini cookie cutters (below) for the heart shape and glitter (below) for the heart.

10. Shabby chic Christmas gift and decoration bows
These sweet bows using natural fabric and lace will make beautiful adornments for presents and decorations for the tree. Although you can buy them made up, they would be very easy to make yourself if you already have some scraps of natural material, lace and rough string or similar.
11. Shabby chic/vintage gingerman bunting
These gingermen are so charming and the red/white string gives them a storybook cottage / Scandinavian feel. You can buy the wooden versions ready made up, or make your own version from natural card, white paper and rough string. If you love the red and white twine, you can buy this here and there are small pack sizes available.

12. Shabby chic Christmas bear decoration
This little fella gets my vote as the cutest Christmas dec ever! Again, you can buy him ready made up – or make your own cheaper versions from natural card, red paper or paint, ribbon, natural string and a little Fimo for his nose. A row of these little bears would look adorable attached to natural string for a fireplace decoration.

These super sweet straws are perfect for adding Christmas cheer to your table this season! You could attach little flags to regular straws for a cheaper version.

16. Shabby chic Christmas tree decorations
These super sweet red felt and lace decorations with white strings and beads would look very cute on the tree. You could make your own red felt decorations and use lace, fabric or ribbon to embellish them. Glue or sew two pieces of felt together, or mount them on natural card so that they are thick enough to work as a decoration.
17. Shabby chic table runners
Although not Christmassy themselves, these gorgeous natural table runners are the perfect starting point for your Christmas table. They are easy to make yourself from a length of natural fabric, although the one below is great value.

This pack of 24 little gingermen would make a lovely table decoration but also work brilliantly as card, tag and present embellishments!
20. Shabby chic Christmas ‘postcard’ napkins
There are so many cute napkins around at this time of year – I love these because the ‘postcard’ design is a bit different, and I’ll be saving a few for decoupage.
21. Shabby chic/vintage Christmas santa decorations
These little santas would look lovely hanging from the tree or dotted around the room for Christmassy cheer. It’d be quite easy to make your own version with a little red card, white/pink paper, beads and natural string – you could use string and beads for hands and arms, and card for the legs.
22. Shabby chic Christmas pegs with gold stars
These little pegs are great for embellishing cards, tags or pictures. If you’ve already got mini pegs, it’d be very easy to add your own sparkley stars or shapes using glitter card.
23. Shabby chic Christmas tealight holder
I always like to have a centrepiece in the middle of the Christmas table and this year, I’ve gone for this gorgeous candle holder. I love the distressed shabby chic effect and the fact that it’s not too Christmassy so will sit happily in my window when the season is through.
24. Shabby chic jar fairy lights
Cosy fairy lights are a must-have at Christmas – and for something a little different, why not splash out on this string of lights stuffed into mini glass jars? Lovely for stringing up across the fireplace or anywhere around the house.
