Having a dressing table in your room makes makes a glamorous statement - but these beautiful items of furniture are also very useful. Whether you're looking for somewhere to sit and do your hair, you want somewhere to keep your jewellery or you're planning on doing your make up, a dressing table can be a practical addition to your bedroom furniture.
When you find a collection of shabby chic dressing tables, you'll notice they fall into three distinct groups - those that are genuinely old, vintage pieces; those that are distressed to look like vintage pieces or have some distressed elements; and finally, those that are just white and ornate. Okay, the latter aren't strictly shabby chic at all - but they fit very neatly into the shabby chic glamorous look and for that reason, they're often labelled shabby chic.
The features you choose for your shabby chic dressing table are going to depend very much whether you're hunting down a statement piece or want something discreet to fit into a smaller space. You could choose a shabby chic dressing table with drawers - or without. You might opt for a mirror - or not. You could of course buy your table and mirror separately - this allows you even more choice, as you can pick a mirror that is more ornate and choose a simpler cheaper base.
Some dressing tables don't have a space to tuck your legs - they're basically drawers with a mirror on top. These can look lovely but won't be any good if you want to sit and do your hair, for example. Having a clear idea of what you want to use your table for can help you find a piece of furniture that you'll be really happy with. Be sure to measure how much space you have as well - if you've got a narrow room with limited space, you can choose a slimmer table with a stool that tucks underneath to ensure you won't be taking up too much room.
Take the time to think about your storage needs before you make your purchase - it's easier to deal with these issues before you buy. If your dressing table won't have enough room for all your make up or jewellery, consider buying a small chest of drawers to go next to it - or choose a design that has more inbuilt storage.
One advantage of shabby chic style is that it doesn't require you to match every single item of furniture in your room perfectly. Having pieces that don't match is all part of the look. Some of our shabby chic dressing tables will fit perfectly well into a space with modern furniture.
Having a comfortable stool or chair can help you get better use out of your shabby chic dressing table - and it also will look the part. Many tables come with a matching stool that tucks neatly underneath when not in use, ensuring that your room space is maximised.
Take the time to keep your shabby chic dressing table in good condition and it will serve you for many years - or decades. Where your table has a wood finish, wipe away spills with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Take care not to scratch the table and avoid placing hot or wet items directly onto the wood. If you do your make up or hair at the dressing table, make sure you don't let any solvent based, abrasive or alcohol based liquids come into contact with the table as they may damage it.
